I almost didn’t go. As a single mom, how could I possibly afford a trip to Scotland? The Universe answered that question with a car wreck and a settlement. Being Scottish and frugal, I set out to find the cheapest way to travel.

In 2009, I packed up my fourteen-year-old son and bought two tickets to Scotland. I had no genealogy research, no ancestral map, no plan beyond a deep feeling that we needed to go. What I did have was a very tight budget and a stubborn belief that this trip was possible.

We spent two weeks in Scotland for less than $3000 — both of us. Every penny. Flights, trains, bed and breakfasts, castles, meals, and one very memorable boat ride on Loch Ness. But keep in mind that this was 2009. Prices obviously have gone up. However, I am still frugal and always seek new cheaper ways to travel.

That trip changed everything. Not just because of what we saw but because of what I learned, that ancestral travel is not reserved for people with big budgets or perfectly researched family trees. It is for anyone who feels the pull.

If you are standing where I stood, excited but overwhelmed, dreaming but doubting, this page is for you. I have organized everything I know into simple steps so you can find exactly what you need without drowning in information.

Start where you are. Take one step. The land has been waiting for you.
